Check out clerk - Check out clerk

I had both a good experience and a bad experience in one day at Walmart in Myrtle Beach, SC, store 2712, manager Randall Ulrickson, phone 843-445-7781. This occurred on 3/28/09 at 16:55:07, check out time. This is not the first time I have had a very unpleasant experience with the check-out clerks but the first time I have complained and I have reached my limit and do not ever plan on entering another Wal-Mart.

First, I was in produce where I encountered a young black man named Eugene. I asked him for small bags of baby spinach as all that was out was family size. He said he would be more than happy to go in the back and see if there was some there. Shortly after he returned with a large box full of baby spinach. I told him how much I appreciated him getting it for me. I then looked for romaine lettuce and all I could find was organic that was orginally $2.78 but on sale for $2. I asked him if he was sure it would ring up $2 because it wasn't marked on the bag. He said if it did not, to come and get him. I thanked him, finished my shopping and went to the checkout lane where I encountered another black clerk. The reason I am mentioning their color is to show you that this isn't a racial thing I am complaining about because both clerks were black. Of course, as usual, there was no Hello, no Welcome to WalMart, no eye contact, NO NOTHING to show me that I was welcome at Walmart. The first 2 items I placed on the counter were the romaine and the baby spinach. I turned to get something out of my basket and she had already rung them up so I didn't get to see if the romaine rang up the sale price. I asked her how much it rang up and her reply, in a very slurring, unhappy voice was , "I don';t know". I asked if she could check her register and see what it range up. She replied she wasn't sure she could do that. I asked if she would just try. She did and said it range up $2.78 and I said, "Oh, that isn't the correct price". Her reply was, "Well, why did it ring up $2.78 if that isn't the price". Her tone again was one of aggravation and annoyance. I told her I didn't know why it rang that up, that I didn't work there and she did and it seemed to be her job to find out why it range up an incorrect price". Well, she was not at all interested in doing that so I asked her to hold on, not ring anything else up until I got the guy from Produce Dept. I found Eugene and told him what happened. He immediately came to my check out station, told the clerk, whose name is Janet, that the romaine lettuce should be $2.00, which she then rang up. As each item was rung up, I got a rude comment of some sort from her. I was visibly upset by her rudeness and vowed never to enter that store again. On the other hand, the Produce Clerk, Eugene, was more than helpful and turned a bad experience into a good one. Why all your employees cannot be as kind and courteous as Eugene is beyond me. I have checked out before when the clerks wouldn't even make eye contact with me and carried on a conversation with another clerk throughout my entire check-out time. I shop at Walmart on average of 3 times a week and each time I leave there upset. I am 67 years old and my blood pressure does not need to be put through this kind of treatment. I would much rather go to another store and take my pittance of a Social Security check to buy groceries and products there and pay more and be treated with respect and kindness than to go to Walmart and constantly be treated with such rudness. I have heard this same complaint from many, many people in the Myrtle Beach area. If you can give Eugene in Produce a word of praise for the kindness he shows to customers, I would be most grateful because he certainly deserves it. Janet, on the other hand, in my opinion, should be placed on probation and her salary withheld for a few days but I understand from other people who have complained to Walmart that the incidents they complain about never seem to change. Whether this one does or not, I will not know as I do not plan on entering your store again but did want you to know exactly why and do want you to know what a jewel you have in Eugene. Incidentally, I am white and have no problem dealing with blacks unless they behave like Janet did. I volunteer my services in a gift shop at a hospital dealing with the public and I would never dream of talking to a customer like she talked to me.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.
