Stamps - EBT "food stamp" cards

Thurs., 03/18/2010

Subject: Discrimination Against Customers Who Use the Lone Star EBT Card

Just because a customer uses a Lone Star EBT card (popularly referred to as “food stamps”) to pay for food doesn’t mean that customer is illiterate! Customers are tired of being treated as if they can’t read and that they’re unaware of what their EBT balance is when they shop. Having a Walmart cashier circle the remaining EBT balance on a receipt, or pointing out the remaining EBT balance on a receipt, or announcing something publicly in reference to a customer using “food stamps” are all shoddy practices meant to demean and insult the customer. Walmart does not treat customers who use credit cards, such as Discover or VISA, this way. Therefore, Walmart's cashiers and management are committing discrimination against individuals who use a Lone Star EBT card to pay for their food. Walmart should immediately cease its practice of discrimination against individuals using a Lone Star EBT card by doing the following:

. DO NOT circle the remaining Lone Star EBT balance on the customer’s receipt.

. DO NOT point out the remaining Lone Star EBT balance on the customer’s receipt.

. DO NOT voice anything publicly about the customer using a Lone Star EBT
card or make any comment at all about the customer using “food stamps.”

Walmart needs to STOP its discrimination against customers who use a Lone Star EBT card to pay for their food!

P.S. I shop at Walmart a lot. I'm mostly satisfied with Walmart, but this one EBT "food stamps" issue is a BIG irritant.

I AGREE with you it's none of their business what your balance is. REGUARDLESS of the fact for some of you ignorant ppl on here with your ignorant "get a job" comments. PPL who receive those benefits work as well, & still can be considered a low income family since their job may not pay as much. In addition if you was at the Dr Office you don't see the Dr Shouting out and putting a big red circle on your medical diagnosis in front of every one in the waiting room do you??? and Marsh Supermarket Stores does this as well.

Honestly, I don't see any issue here?? I am new to the Food Stamp program and appreciate any help in understanding how the program works. Anytime a cashier does something helpful FOR YOU it is generally referred to as "Customer Service". Face it: You ARE on food stamps - get over it!

well anyone who shops at Sams has to pay for a membership. Why should you be exempt because you use a Lone Star Card?

I totally agree with you... and am pursuing every possible avenue to ensure they change and become more discreet!

I just found out Sam's Club will not accept your Lonestar card if you do not pay for a membership! I think that is very wrong!

I use food stamps myself. Personally, I don't mind at all if the cashier circles my ending balance - it's a little convenience.
